All machine types across all industries have one thing in common: manufacturers are integrating more and more electric drives into machines. But do developers and designers really need to plan ever larger control cabinets for this?

Maximum flexibility for the optimum of each machine

The latest generation of servo drives ctrlX DRIVE offers maximum flexibility for the user. The portfolio ranges from an input level axis with command value control to a drive-integrated motion system. The solution is easy to use via plug & play. The complete motor range (rotary and linear, housing and kit motor) offers the optimum components for every machine.

Minimal space requirements and significant performance advantages

A significant advantage of the servo drives ctrlX DRIVES is that they are real space-saving wonders. This is because the drives require extremely little installation space and the occupancy in the control cabinet is thus reduced by 50%. Integrating the ctrlX CORE control software fully eliminates the space required for the control system. The modular multi-axis concept makes them ideal for 300 mm in the control cabinet.  In addition to space savings, significant performance advantages result, for example from a 30% higher torque density.

Scalability and consistency for tailor-made solutions

The development of ctrlX DRIVE focused on adaptability in many respects. The system is therefore designed to be scalable and consistent. This means that tailor-made solutions can be used with peak currents from 6 A to 375 A. Sufficient power is always available, also for extensive machine designs with output of up to 260 kW.

Through Multi-Ethernet and Multi-Encoder, the drives follow the principle of openness and flexibility. The drive system has a decentralized intelligence and is therefore open for the use of its own user IP, among other things. Digital three-dimensional simulation models are available to support engineering in a virtual environment.

Openness through ctrlX SAFETY for safe automation

Open – but secure: In combination with ctrlX SAFETY, ctrlX DRIVE guarantees the perfect and safe solution for every application. Bosch Rexroth offers users a compact yet scalable safety system that can be used flexibly – from the drive-integrated SafeMotion solution in ctrlX DRIVE to the fully comprehensive ctrlX SAFETY controller. The system thus has a very high safety level and enables efficient engineering. ctrlX DRIVE is perfectly adaptable to any safety topology.

In this process, the most diverse requirements are fulfilled: The scalable SafeMotion software is based on ctrlX DRIVE and is available both as an entry-level version, with extended functions or for the most demanding requirements. At the same time, a purely drive-based safety solution can be achieved with this system, independently of the higher-level control system.

ctrlX DRIVE – servo motors

Bosch Rexroth rounds off its drive systems with an advanced motor range. The MS2N/MS2E servo motors from the ctrlX DRIVE product range combine compact dimensions and maximum dynamism with maximum accuracy in position, speed and torque values. The servo motors have a single cable connection for all drive tasks in factory automation and are both powerful and flexibly configurable. Seven sizes ensure optimum coverage of all requirements.

The rotary and linear direct drives from Bosch Rexroth dispense with mechanical transmission components such as coupling and transmission. This results in fewer components, minimal wear and maximum productivity. All in all: The innovative direct drives enable maximum dynamism and power.

ctrlX DRIVE – MS2N servo motors:


The MS2N servo motors are designed for high performance: They are characterized by more power per area as well as highest energy efficiency – and this with compact dimensions. Thus, the servo motors in all motor sizes have high torques and an improved S1 torque at higher speeds. The continuous power can be further increased by optional forced ventilation or water cooling. The servo motors also have up to five times the overload capacity, which goes hand in hand with very low torque ripple. The field weakening mode which is available in conjunction with ctrlX DRIVE increases the useful torque-speed range beyond the voltage limit.

Extensive portfolio – suitlable for every application

The range of products is not only versatile, but also extensive. More than 50 motor types cover a maximum torque of up to 692 Nm and maximum speeds of up to 9000 rpm. With dynamic and inertial motor variants, finely graduated torque and speed ranges, four encoder options with safety technology up to SIL3 PLe and optional single-cable connection, the motors flexibly meet the diverse requirements of modern automation.


Intelligent in the system

The servo motors are designed for state-of-the-art requirements – for example in Industry 4.0 environments. They provide a dynamic temperature model that ensures safe use up to the operating limit. The digital twin of the motor is used in the design tools as well as in the ctrlX DRIVE controller. This means that any application can be designed and implemented simply, quickly and reliably.

Thanks to a new torque model, each motor can be used as a data source for intelligent machines or Industry 4.0 applications. The individual measurements of each motor are stored in the motor data memory and the saturation and temperature data are processed by the Rexroth drive control units in real time. This leads to a considerable increase in torque accuracy and reduces the tolerance range during on-going operation to a fraction of the previously usual values.

ctrlX DRIVE – MS2E servo motors:


The motor generation MS2E offers highest dynamics and safety in ATEX applications up to equipment group II and equipment category III for dust and gas.

The self-cooled motors of this series offer overlapping torque ranges in six sizes with maximum torques up to 266 Nm. With safe high-resolution single or multi-turn encoders in SIL2 PLd and with optional holding brake or keyway, they are predestined for tailor-made drive solutions in all potentially explosive atmospheres.
